Since I am assuming you are a hobbyist looking to do this type of work for fun I would suggest downloading and learning Blender. Recently it has become more than cabable to handle a lot of simulation work like fluids, smoke, fire, and other particle effects. If I had to start this hobby all over again I would just use Blender as long as I can.
I would have saved a lot of money in the long run! Cinema4d is great but if you don't intend on doing any freelance then it can be an expensive hobby. If you do intend on freelancing then suck it up and buy X-Particles once you save up the cash. It's well worth the money.Houdini Apprentice is free or you can spend 200 bucks a year on Indie (for commercial work. I know this is a c4d thread but there are probably a few more sympathetic ears here. I just started messing around with Houdini lately, and holy Crap!

I haven't felt like I knew nothing about 3D in a long time, and this made me feel like I'm starting over from day one.Going to the node driven workflow of DOP, POP, VOP, CHOP and SHOPs has got my head spinning a bit. I almost feel at a disadvantage knowing what I do outside of that flow as I'm always looking for the shortcuts to do something that I thought was simple (in C4d).I'm just playing around as well as a hobbyist, so it's not like my job depends on it. I do love a challenge and I understand the benefits of such granular control over every aspect of the environment, but it definitely seems like a piece of software that would take a decade to master. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.EDIT:POP = Particle operatorsDOP = Dynamic operatorsCHOP = Channel operatorsSHOP = Shader operators (like Maya's Hypershade, shaders are built with VOP nodes)VOP = VEX operators.
